The Kitchen Sink
I’ve been spending a lot of time under my kitchen sink lately. Although it’s not a pleasant place to be, I’m getting some level of satisfaction from it.
Why have I been under the sink? Because my countertops had to go. And, no, I’m not answering any more why’s.
The sales person at the granite store told me I would need to have a plumber disconnect the sink for them to make a template and then have the plumber come back a week or so later after the new counters were installed to connect the new sink.
There was no way I was going a week or so without a kitchen sink, or a dishwasher for that matter, and I wasn’t wild about the idea of having a plumber come out twice.
So I tackled the disconnecting and several temporary reconnectings myself.
As you can see from the last photo, this also involved me disconnecting the utility sink that I had in my basement. I figured we could live without the disposal for a week, so I didn’t attempt to hook that up. And we have to keep the cold water turned off unless we are using it because it is leaking at the shut-off valve which we discovered from the water in our basement.
I felt a little less guilty about getting rid of those perfectly good counters because I donated them to Habitat for Humanity. They showed up yesterday to pick up the counters which saved me a disposal fee through the granite installer. It took some maneuvering to get that large piece of Corian out the door. It went extremely well except for the ding in my wall and knocking into the light fixture in the hallway. And the large piece cracked as it was finally placed into the truck.
The new counters get installed on Monday, and a real plumber (my uncle) shows up on Tuesday (I hope).
